McKenzie Friend Academy

Training the Next Generation.

When fathers are forced to represent themselves in court, the odds are stacked heavily against them. Our Academy trains veterans of the system to become highly competent, child-focused McKenzie Friends who provide critical support inside the courtroom.

Family Court Support

Leveling the playing field.

A well-trained McKenzie Friend can mean the difference between an unrepresented father losing his case due to procedural confusion, and securing a fair, shared-parenting arrangement.

The Crisis of the Unrepresented

Since cuts to legal aid, thousands of fathers are forced to walk into family court as Litigants in Person (LiPs). Against a trained solicitor or barrister representing their ex-partner, the inherent power imbalance is staggering. Fathers often lose not on the merits of their parenting, but because they do not understand court protocols.

A McKenzie Friend is a layperson who sits beside a Litigant in Person to provide moral support, take notes, help with case papers, and quietly give advice. However, an untrained, emotionally charged friend can do more harm than good.

  • The Danger of Bad Advice: The wrong advice inside a courtroom can lead to disastrous orders being made against a father.
  • The Need for Standardization: The Dads Matter Academy exists to ensure every McKenzie Friend carrying our name is vetted, trained, and deeply child-focused.
  • Empowerment: We don't just provide a shoulder to cry on; we train men to help others build legally sound, compelling cases based purely on evidence and the child's welfare.

The Academy Training

To ensure the highest standard of support, our Academy demands rigorous training. We accept veterans of the system who have achieved positive outcomes and have processed their own trauma. The training focuses on:

Legal Boundaries & Ethics

Crucial training on what a McKenzie Friend is legally allowed to do (take notes, provide moral support, organize documents) versus what they cannot do (conduct litigation or address the court directly).

Case Management Skills

Teaching veterans how to help disorganized, panicked fathers build coherent, indexed court bundles, draft clear position statements, and stick strictly to the facts rather than emotion.

Emotional De-escalation

Family court is highly charged. Our Academy trains mentors to act as a grounded anchor for the father, preventing outbursts in the courtroom that could damage his case or reflect poorly on his parenting.

Have you survived the system?

If you have successfully navigated the family court system, maintained a relationship with your children, and are ready to put your experience to use protecting the next generation, we want you in the Academy.
